About

Pablo Mena Escudero is a Spanish percussionist based in Basel (Switzerland), passionate about new music and the sonic possibilities of innovative instruments.

He graduated with his Bachelor’s and Master’s studies in percussion with Prof. César Peris at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón in Zaragoza (2015-2020). In the meanwhile, he had the opportunity to take part in the Laboratorio de Fabricación at the Etopia Center for Art and Technology, where he led his project and gained hands-on experience in instrument building. This Master’s in Contemporary Music granted him the FUGA scholarship and a collaboration with Michael Maierhof.

Since 2023, he has continued his professional studies as a percussionist in Basel while also working on instrument construction in a dedicated workshop at the Hochschule, where he has full access to professional tools and machines.

Additionally, his father, a mechanic with over 40 years of experience, has been his mentor. He first inspired his passion for building instruments and taught him about metalworking and welding.

He has performed at festivals like Darmstadt and Mizmorim and with ensembles such as the Basel Symphony Orchestra and Camerata Variabile. He has worked with composers like Lachenmann, Svoboda, and Saunders.

Currently, after finishing his first Master’s in Performance in Switzerland in Christian Dierstein class, he is pursuing a Master’s in Pedagogy at the Hochschule für Musik Basel and improvisation with Andrea Neumann, exploring new timbres and instruments.

“I am very passionate about my way to becoming an instrument maker and eager to learn more from the upcoming challenges”
